Congratulations, you managed to scroll to the end. Sorry for that. ^^;
I didn't want to put it into multiple pages since I had originally meant to just post a simple link to the picture itself, like I did way back in the day with the "spiritual predecessor" for 2.0. But since I figured I might have a bit more to say about this, and you might want to be able to do a spoilery comment yourself, I figured I'd do it this way with a hidden regular page after all.
And this certainly became much longer than intended. I was originally picturing maybe a handful of individual shots, with a lot more back and forth just in text form, but then there was more and more that I wanted to have the reactions for (though admittedly, it got a bit tricky for Aki at times - and yeah, there certainly is some copy/paste in general :P). And I already cut it down quite a bit to just include the craziness that'd be relevant to them. ^^;
And even when I had it scripted out, I ended doing a few "last-minute" additions, like the close-ups before/after the kiss at the end.
Not quite last minute, but still not exactly planned from the start was the reaction to "everyone hated me" - maybe not quite fitting in a sarcastic and explicitly non-canon take on the movies, after all, but I guess I couldn't help an IC moment there. It wouldn't be much of a stretch that T2t Shinji would fear being hated for causing TI either.
A side result of the length was that I actually hit the height limit for the canvas - twice - forcing me to lower my usual working resolution down, which is why the pencil effects may seem a bit different from the first bit. Still came of nicely in both variants, I think.

So yeah, I know, I know, "it was all a dream" is probably the laziest way out. Thing is, it was initially just the second part of another idea that would have eased the transition (I go into that a bit below).
But this is my silly "meta" take on things. I may or may not have something more serious in the works, but we'll see how things will go for that.
The dream thing also kinda allowed me to skip around and have things simply being hazy for Shinji for things I haven't seen/don't know for sure yet. ;)
They also seem to take things kinda serious for a "dream", I guess? Not like things would have to make sense in those, nor would Shinji be able to influence it much. But hey, why not get in the moment? :P

I initially had plans to do this in two parts (not these two though), then figuring that maybe not everyone wants to read a lengthy rant about the movies, be it for spoiler or annoyance for this slightly biased take if I were to post it out in the open - but I also kinda wanted to be able to do that. So I settled for splitting it up, with the "Good Morning" part being vague enough that it works without reference and thus could be freely go out into the wild. Though I was wondering whether or not to squeeze a kiss in there already for the LAS crowd-clicks (while I certainly have a lot pics of the "result", I don't give that much direct material), but I liked Shinji just watching his family with a smile there – but I am kinda tempted to make a slightly condensed alternate part 2, with essentially just that bit at the end to post in those places.
The original first part, and initial idea in general, was something else entirely. One thing I was initially a bit hung-up about the ending (though it somewhat faded since then), was the whole "Shinji creates a world without Eva" thing - which he already did with the AU in Ep26. But that, together with him acting a bit OOC there, sparked the idea of recreating that scene, with Shinji reading the script for the ending - which turns out was "written" by Mari, who's also there, playing with a miniature set while they talk about how that could be one option, but there'd be many others. This was the script I did for that: txt
The idea was essentially to loosen up the ending a bit, to essentially still allow anyone unhappy with it to make up their own - followed by the "Good Morning" being my one. But there were several reasons why I didn't do that part after all:
- While it would still allow to keep the ending as is, it felt like it'd still be a bit too condescending to those who liked it (or the other way round, be regarded as bitter fanboy who can't accept it). As you can see in the script, it was a bit on the nose in parts.
- I didn't feel comfortable putting it out without seeing more myself. Some of the dialogue may already not work anymore as I saw/heard more, like I've seen at least a different (more simple) translation for Shinji's line, and by now it seems more like he redid the existing world, rather than creating a separate "new" one and leaving an "old" one behind. And I also saw/heard that the movie's already using similar imagery to Ep26, and I'm not sure if that would work in favor or against it.
- I grew a bit worried that, even though it's clearly not meant to be a serious and with an explicit non-canon warning, it might have come across that Rebuild-Shinji would have essentially hijacked T2t-Shinji - which is most certainly not the intention.
- Purely on a technical level: Background and props have never been my forte (which this thing again demonstrate). I don't really think I could have pulled off the miniature set(s) as I had intended.

Regarding that non-canonicity with T2t, you might wondering why it wouldn't work. Well, aside from this being obviously a meta joke thing. It's a bit up in the air on when this would play. I kinda drew Aki more akin to how I usually do, so more like her 3-4 year old self. However, then she should have had Kiko with her, since she pretty much had her all the time back then. Though she did end kinda small at times (though that was more due to composition reasons), so I guess that could work either way.
Should she know about pirates and clowns? They do still have books and theoretically a DVD player, and tell her stories about princes and princesses, so... maybe?
Her being up earlier than her parents when I made an explicit scene of Shinji being too scared to wake her up? Not really, I also already had precedent for the other way round. Plus, as I came to learn, kids tend to be up much earlier than their parents. However, I did give Asuka that extra line to imply that it could be either of those, depending on the day.
But there's of course the big part - they likely wouldn't be talking about this stuff so openly in front of her, even with Shinji catching himself before certain parts.
And of course, Shinji probably wouldn't be such a horn-dog in front of her. ;)
Given how I ended up going much more for the feels in the end, I was actually contemplating taking that joke out. But not only was it one of the first ideas for it, it's of course a callback to that original 2.0 omake by being a bit of a sting against the somewhat questionable way they decided to show off Asuka's grown body...

Anyways, the old 2.0 omake didn't age too terrible well (yet?). Let's see how this'll fare. :P
