Oh boy, this one...
Not sure if I need to add much regarding content.
If you are wondering though, let me remind you that, yeah, she did know about the "huge armors, blessed with with the mothers' spirits" and even recognized them as such in T2t.
Speaking of T2t, I didn't originally have Aki reach up at the end here, just her being confused. And though she may still be, "Mama no cwy" has been a thing of hers since early on, so it's only in character.
On the technical side of things... OH BOY, this one...
Yeah, yeah, "promoting" it yet again, but if you look at this page's timelapse, this one was really quite over the place (including adding a panel at the very last minute).
Bit of a preface, after Chapter 1, where I went in page by page entirely blind, starting from Chapter 2, I wrote the script entirely and did the story-boarding at least mostly in advance to avoid any pitfalls. For this chapter though, given that the script already took forever to complete, I kinda skimped on the later - which is fine most of the time, but certainly bit me in the butt for this one.
Going by the script, this was to be a single panel:
- A (she pulls Aki closer): "Yes..." "Yes, it is..."
But when I started drawing, I realized that I needed much more there, which became a problem with space, since I also really wanted to fade out on a big, zoomed-out shot there. I even briefly considered stretching it out like the recent bonus pages, but after almost 200 pages, I didn't really want to mess with that. Also considered splitting it, but the first part didn't really have enough for a page on its own.
Fortunately, flipping it to a spread still kinda worked.
Even then, I'm still not sure if I could properly convey that part as I wanted to (you can also see me changing the "HAND!" again there pretty late in process after already having it inked). I wanted to show her tightly holding onto Aki, but it shouldn't look like she'd be hurting her either, of course. Again, found myself kinda wishing I could animate to fully convey what I had in mind, also allowing for a shot of her face that I briefly considered squeezing in as well somehow, but alas... :/
On a positive technical side, when sketching, I really liked how the silhouette shot came off, so I decided to keep that with pencil-only.
